I don’t know if you already have plans for Valentine’s Day, or if you still make them, but what I am sure of is that most of you have already started thinking about next weekend. I bet I can guess what is going through your heads – the usual problems, right?  “Shall we go out or stay in?  Then if we go out – where to go? What to wear? Shall I get him a gift – but what?  And so on and so forth… I’ve been there.  Don’t worry because whatever you decide it will be wonderful –it’s Valentine’s, the day of love!

For those of you who decide to stay at home and host a party for two – or are considering having a drink before going out – here are three cocktails to try.

Many of you probably already know that a Margarita is one of my favourite cocktails, so we will have a Valentine’s Day variation on the Margarita and two other cocktails, equally lovely.

prickly pear margarita-1-2

Prickly Pear Margarita

3 shots of tequila blanco

1 shot of Cointreau

1½ shots of lime juice

2 shots of prickly pear syrup

Salt or sugar for glass garnish

Kumquats and lime peal or flowers for garnish

Cocktail shaker

Martini glasses

First chill the glasses by putting them into the fridge or fill them with ice and water for a couple of minutes; if you are planning to put sugar on the rim you will need to do that as well before putting the glasses into the fridge. Now put the spirits, lime and syrup into the cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake hard to incorporate all the ingredients and then strain into the chilled and decorated Martini glass.

english rose cocktail

1½ shot of gin

¾ dry vermouth

1 tsp of grenadine

A squeeze of lemon (not too much)

Cherry and sugar(optional) or rose for garnish

Martini glasses

Fill the shaker with ice, add the spirits and shake well. Strain into the glass  and garnish with sugar and a cherry.

strawberry martini-1

Strawberry Martini

Fun and fruity cocktail, with a good kick and spicy notes. Perfect to start the evening with.

7 fresh and ripe medium sized strawberries

2½ shots of premium vodka

10 ml of sugar syrup

Pinch of freshly ground black pepper

First chill the glasses. Muddle 6 strawberries and mint sprig in the cocktail shaker into a mash; add vodka, sugar syrup, black pepper powder, and ice cubes. Give a good shake and strain into the chilled Martini glass.  Garnish with remaining strawberry and mint.
