Have you seen UK September Vogue yet? I bought it a couple of days ago and did a double take at a feature heralding “the return of show off fashion”. Because, apparently, after a years of investment buys (read- a very expensive cashmere jumpers) and a year of normcore, we are going the other way. Glamcore is the word, which we will probably hear on repeat comes re-entrée (because we are far too busy in the summer Instagramming inflatable swans to worry about that now).
That got me thinking- how ready am I for all that glitz? And how practical is that going to be? Will I really give up my black/navy/grey cashmere collection for sequins, feathers and fur pompons?
There is something decadently opulent about sumptuous (if fake) fur collars, jewell colour velvets and raze dazzle of sequins. All that reminds me of a by-gone era of Imperial Russia. Will this season craziness, seen through the filter of 80’s era, be relevant to our everyday lives?
I, for starters, don’t have a private driver (if you don’t count Uber, which is treacherous because it does make you believe you do have one). I can hardly see myself trudging through the London rain in the morning, wearing a turquoise dress peppered with silver sequins under a zebra print coat.
Secondly, glamcore will be about telling the world- in capital letters- that the wearer is a wealthy woman. I guess it’s an individual choice. For me the ultimate luxury is still that understated cashmere coat which only an insider eye will recognize as a luxury item.
But of course, let’s not be hasty here. Comes December I will be lusting after that fringed/feather/sequin dress and sparkly heels (I still have my designs on a pair of glittery Jimmy Choo). Until then, I’m taking my cues from certain Mrs Alt…
