London clinic in Chelsea is so discreet that I have trouble finding it. I walk up and down a little street between sweet muse houses before I decide to call the doctor’s PA. She guides me by sticking her upper half out of the window and waving madly. I ring the bell downstairs.

Yes, it is an emergency. No, I’m not sick. I’m here because suddenly I realised that I’m not the prettiest girl in the room any more. Just kidding. On a November photo shoot, whilst flicking through the images I realised with horror that I have a double chin. And not only a double chin but something akin to jowls hanging on both sides of my face. I’m horrified. I kind of always thought that I will be young forever what with my father looking perpetually some 15 years younger than he really is. But that day I realised with horror that I may not be Dorian Gray after all. Something had to be done about it.

I’ve read that we age in jumps as in not slowly and gradually but in great big swoops. Looking at my holiday photos and those from November, I wholeheartedly agree. I think I’ve aged at least 5 years since July.

But I’m not ready to give up. In our superficial world where beauty matters, I don’t want to fade into oblivion. So in pursuit of an eternal youth fountain I’ve carefully researched London clinics and here I am, waiting to be seen by the doctor.

I saw her on the photos and in a youtube video and she looks phenomenal. I’m convinced I can trust her because she seems to be her own best advertisement.

When I tell her what I want to have done, she gets it immediately. She tells me that the “jowls” are a result of fat which in our twenties gives us pretty, round faces and in our thirties starts migrating south, congregating around our jaw line. “When did you notice this?” she asks. “Last week”- I reply. “Oh, so it’s an emergency” she laughs. Didn’t I say so? Exactly.

She gives me two options- either a few rounds of mesotherapy or an injection of serum called Aqualyx. She explains in detail both procedures, warning me that with Aqualyx I will have about a week of a downtime (meaning I will not be able to leave the house) and a bruise or two. Both are being used to reduce stubborn fat pockets by dissolving fat cells (I’m no doctor so that’s what I remember being told. Please do your own research) but Aqualyx helps to see the results faster. I’m so desperate for results that I go for Aqualyx despite the threat of swelling and bruising.

The injection, whilst not painful is certainly uncomfortable and-as told, I swell afterwards. Actually, by the time I get home I look like a hamster and the tenderness doesn’t go down for over a week. Every time I look at myself in the mirror, I wander if I have made a huge and costly mistake.

weight loss 2-1

But finally the swelling does go down and over the next three weeks I start to see the results. My jawline is much, much sleeker and the “jowls” almost disappeared. I keep looking at my profile in the mirror but this time it is with pleasure.

Would I do it again? Yes and no. Despite rather spectacular results I wouldn’t do it on my face again, purely because the downtime was so long (it’s obviously a very sensitive area). But as for the rest of my body…

Feeling adventurous I decide to melt the fat on the back of my arms. You know, that stubborn pockets on the upper half of your arms that suddenly appear out of nowhere when your body clock strikes 30. Healthy food and sport- I hear from well meaning friends. Oh, only what I’ve been doing for the past 20 years then…

I decide on having Aqualyx as well as Cavi Lipo at the same session. Cavi Lipo is basically hand held device attached to a machine that uses ultra sound to break down fat cells which are later metabolized through your liver. I’ve had it done before and loved the results. Again as with Auqualyx, it’s not obesity treatment. It works on stubborn fat pockets difficult to shift even with diet and fitness. Results depend on an individual. Previously I’ve lost 2.5 cm on each leg and 3 in the waist in only one session but I’m told it’s because I am fit and have little body fat.

This time I’m blasting saddlebags, chin, arms and upper back. I ask for Aqualyx injections in both arms afterwards.

1 hour later…If I thought that arms injections wouldn’t have as much downtime as my jaw area I was very much mistaken. Straight after I am unable to move my arms. Within the next 2 days they swell and for a while I resemble Popeye…

The back of my arms are still a bit painful but the swelling had gone. I love the results. Sure, I’ve not slimmed down a dress size but this wasn’t my aim. My upper arms look like they did when I was 23. Saddlebags are mostly gone and I’m happy with my chin. But I’m the happiest with my back where I finally see muscle definition. With bikini season around the corner, I think I may book another session…

Thank you Chloe! The swelling went down completely after about 5 days but for the first 3 I was so swollen I wasn’t able to leave the house. But I liked the results so I had it done on my bingo wings, too 🙂 Ana xx

Yes, the swelling may look a bit scary at the beginning but it will go down soon. You should see some improvements straight away but please don’t panic if it’s not great at first. For me to see real results tok about 2 weeks after the swelling went down. I woke up and suddenly I had a clean jaw line without double chin and jowls. I’m now looking to get rid of my saddle bags this way 🙂 Please let me now how you got on! xx

Hi, this article is so helpful thank you. Did you have more than one treatment on your chin area? I’ve had one treatment (yesterday) & I’m hoping that I don’t need another.

Hi Tina. I only had one treatment (on my chin area- I’ve had t also on my arms, stomach and saddlebags :)) and this was a few years ago. The results were great but not immediate. It took a few weeks to see real results. The doctor recommended a course of few but I only had one because I was very very swollen. I still worked A LOT. Also, this was the only treatment that got rid of a stubborn roll on my stomach, which I’ve had for over a decade. I hope it works for you, too! xx

            Brilliant news!

For me, the chin/Neck swelling & bruising isn’t too bad so I would have another treatment, I’d just rather not! So fingers crossed I’ll see some results over the next few weeks.

            Thanks Ana 🙂
