As I celebrated my first successful year in business (I told you all about it here), I couldn’t help but smiling. Last year it was just me in an empty office, with a laptop for a company. A year on we are five strong and growing. How could I not raise a glass to that?
Yet, when I started on this journey, there were so many times I wanted to quit. I was mainly frustrated by how little money I was earning as a trainee lawyer. I was in my twenties and of course I wanted to be able to buy great clothes! A pair of Jimmy Choo was a far reaching dream. It made me angry that I attracted hundreds of clients who otherwise wouldn’t instruct the firm yet I was hardly making meets end.
I’m happy I didn’t quit. Deep down I subconsciously knew what I needed to do achieve my dreams. A decade on, I know I was right.
If I could give my 20 year old three rules to stick by, they would be these;
@ Be persistent. Nothing, not even a great talent will get you as far as sheer persistence. Keep your eyes on the prize and keep going.
@ Baby steps, baby. It’s daunting to be at the start of a journey with your end goal somewhere in a very, very distant future. How to get there? Break it down to small steps- one at a time. They will add up to hundreds of miles. I once jokingly told a friend I was like a blind horse- I couldn’t see any hurdles (he didn’t get the joke by the way). For me hurdles were something to tackle, not something to fall over.
@ Be prepared for a long haul. I might have had a great first year but I’ve worked for it since 2004. That’s 14 years slogging behind the scenes. So relax and enjoy the ride. You’ll get there 🙂
