Last week I went to a little wine tasting of Portuguese and Italian wines coming on the market this spring. There were a few fabulous new wines I’m keen to introduce you to and I’ll be talking about them over the next couple of weeks.

DONA FATIMA JAPAL (1 of 1)-3

One of them, Manz Dona Fatima Japal 2012, impressed me the most and I thought it would be a wonderful wine to put on your Easter table. It’s Spring trapped in a bottle.

This is a really interesting wine because the Japal grape was forgotten for a century and Anrius’s Manz is the only wine producer who after ‘rediscovering’ it, managed to make amazing wine out of it. It’s a beautiful white with a powerful nose of tropical fruits: peach, mango, star fruit and a touch of coconut, with a big dose of fresh ripe citrus and some oak. On the palette it’s medium bodied and slightly oily but surprisingly fresh and mouth-watering. The flavours are very complex presenting a combination of citrus and exotic fruits, entwined with notes of oak, vanilla, and touch of smoke and minerals – some detected a bit of salt and freshly cut grass. As my friend on the tasting summarised it, “It’s a love chilled of white Burgundy and Albarinio”. Dona Fatima is unusual and may be challenging – I know at least one hater – but I think it’s great to try something different and from time to time to leave your comfort zone of familiar Sauvignons and Chardonnays.

You can get it in Oddbins for £15.
