Mr Bao opened only last year but it’s already famous, and that’s not surprising because the food is absolutely fabulous. Located in Rye Lane, Peckham – an area just few years ago considered one of the worst in London and now rapidly turning into a new Shoreditch with an amazing food scene – this little gem shines the brightest among all the new and trendy eateries. It’s tiny but cosy and welcoming, with a minimalistic but very tasteful decor and amazing, friendly stuff. Every time I pass by this place it’s packed to the rafters, and rightly so since every single dish they serve is really delicious.

Mr Bao doesn’t bother with an extensive menu, rather focusing on perfection for the few dishes they serve that day. There is a maximum of ten different dishes on the menu but they change it often and there is always a new special on the board for you to try.

The food is Taiwanese and it’s served in small portions on the tiny plates, a bit like an Asian tapas – you should order a few to make a meal. Every plate is a little piece of culinary art and offers a completely different tasting experience. What I really love about Mr Bao is the attention to detail when composing each dish or cocktail so they look great, taste amazing and surprise with so many interesting textures.

I go there often and so far I haven’t had a bad dish. This is not a boring bowl of noodles but exciting and modern Asian cuisine. Trust me it’s really worth making the journey to Peckham to try some of the lovely coconut Bao buns with their famous pork belly or yummy prawn filling or pop in during a weekend for the fantastic brunch. Truly scrumptious!
