ENOUGH IS ENOUGH – STOP FUNDING HATE !

I generally don’t write about social problems, politics etc., but this time it’s so important and so frustrating that I have decided to make an exception.

Throughout 2015 and 2016 we were bombarded, through tabloid newspapers and social media, with more and more abusive, hate driven messages. Papers such as the Daily Mail, Mail Online, The Sun, Daily Express and others have lost all standards of decency when it comes to their messages of intolerance, hate and racism. The Daily Expresshas run over 60 front page stories portraying migrants in overwhelmingly negative terms – more than any other publication. We are concerned that the cumulative effect has been to whip up hatred towards our friends and neighbours, and divide us against each other.’ (https://www.change.org/p/rob-collins-waitrose-stop-advertising-in-the-daily-express

Last week the STOP FUNDING HATE campaign launched their second powerful video on Facebook urging the huge retailers like M&S, John Lewis, the Co-op and other companies, e.g. Virgin Media and Walkers Crisps, to stop advertising in newspapers that promote hatred and intolerance. (Here is the link to the video: https://www.facebook.com/stopfundinghate/videos/356313188039351/)

The campaign started in August 2016 with a video by Richard Wilson. This first video went viral and was watched by 6 million people. There is a real power in numbers; such pressure applied by so many people has the power to influence companies.  It is US – the consumers, our opinions and money, that matters to corporations because it is WE who drive their profits. Therefore it is in our power to make them listen to our voice of protest.

Companies such as Lego and the Co-Op Supermarket have already declared their intention to pull advertising out of these tabloids and many more are considering it.

I would like to urge you all to support the campaign and share the STOP FUNDING HATE messages on your social media, and to sign the petition if you could, but also maybe try to run something similar in your countries?

Wine of the week

Yves Cuilleron Viognier Les Vignes d’ a Cote, 2015 ( Philglas and Swiggot £19, The Solent Cellar £18.99, Great Western Wines £16.95)

This beautiful Viognier comes from Condrieau area in Northern Rhone – land of the finest and most expensive viogniers in the world. However while it’s only half the price of a good Condreau it’s still a classic example of the great Rhoneish Viognier. Very expressive and intensely fragrant on the nose with apricots, peach, violets, sweet lemon and some pastry, while the palate is lush and creamy but supported by chalky minerality and the freshness of citrus, balanced with a mouth watering acidity. If you are fond of Condrieau but can’t afford it, try this.  Believe me, you will not be disappointed.yves-cuilleron-viognier-les-vignes-d-a-cote-2015-1-of-1-4
