My favorite past time includes playing fast and loose with my contrary nature. I can’t eat sweets on a diet? Oh, hi box of Catburys chocolates, my long lost friends. Going to the dentist? I’m suddenly hungry, conjuring images of my starved skeleton outside the entrance to Pret. There’s no escaping it- if I can’t have it, it’ll become the stuff of my dreams.
So when the higher-powers-of- abstinence imposed a medical ban on my consumption of alcohol, all I could think of was a glass of wine. I can normally go on weeks without booze but no this time! My dreams could best be described as “a girl walks into a bar…”. So when the ban finished my thirst could only be quenched by Champagne. I plundered my stash for that bottle of Fortnum & Mason Champagne to toast the end of my “dry” season.
Fortnum’s Brut Reserve N.V, Louis Roederer
It’s a lovely, classic bubbly made by one of the best and most reliable Champagne houses. Very round and complex, and on the full bodied side, with a toasty brioche on the long finish. The bubbles are a bit big but this little imperfection only adds extra charm to this outstanding fizz.
