CURRY JUNKY

Yeah that’s me. I’m a total addict when it comes to Indian food. I know it’s probably not so good for me but I just can’t say no when an opportunity arises to have a curry.

Recently I discovered a new place called Ganapati in Peckham and so far their food beats any other takeaway curry I’ve ever had. It’s a bit different to your usual local chicken tikka masala place because it just does Southern Indian cuisine and it’s prepared in as authentic a way as is possible outside of India. Even though their menu isn’t very long, all the dishes are interesting and thought through. There are a couple very tasty game bird dishes, quail and guinea fowl, and some fab seafood ones; crab with ginger or seabass with aromatic herbs. LES MILLERES (2 of 4)

Also it’s great news for vegetarians because almost half of their menu is vegetarian or vegan. Believe me when I say that pretty much all food from Ganapati its absolutely delicious; perfectly cooked, fragrant with perfectly balanced and very interesting spice blends and not overly hot, greasy, or particularly heavy. Best of all are their parathas. These are nothing like the weighty fried tough discuses you normally get; these are tender buttery light stretchy things of joy and a complete revelation to me! Totally addictive!

Ok, so if it’s going to be a curry night then there has to be a suitable drink to go with it. One of the best options would be a good beer, but if you fancy some wine you may like to try the ‘Les Millères’ or something in this style. The ‘Les Millères’ is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre which has a powerful nose of earthy and fruity aromas mixed with a good dose of spice and some herbaceous notes, while the palate is full bodied, intensely spicy and beautifully smooth, showing aromas of red and blackberry, black cherry with aromatic herbal notes of mint and thyme, and a touch of black pepper.

If you can’t get this one then go for something with a similar blend of grapes. You can’t go far wrong with a Côte du Rhone matched with curry.
